Update on measles outbreak declared on Merseyside

A measles outbreak has been declared on Merseyside. There are 13 confirmed and 16 suspected cases ranging in age from nine months to adults aged in their 20s. Six people, four children and two adults, required treatment in hospital. This compares to just one confirmed case on Merseyside in the first six weeks of 2011 and one in the corresponding period of 2010.

Update on Legionnaires’ Cluster Associated with a Hotel in Spain

10 February 2012, 1400hrs. The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has this week been alerted by the Spanish public health authorities about a further case of Legionnaires’ Disease in a UK resident who stayed at the Diamante Beach Hotel in Calpe, Costa Blanca, as well as two French cases. This brings the total number of UK residents associated with this cluster to 12, with three deaths.

Dr Stuart Baldwin

MB BChir Cambridge 1976 MRCGP DRCOG Dr. Baldwin works part-time at North Hill. He has an interest in the management of drug misuse.

Dr David Milne

MA MB BChir Cambridge 1982 MRCP(UK) DRCOG Dr. Milne works at West Bergholt Surgery. He is a GP with a special interest in cardiology. He has developed an echo-cardiography service locally for detection of heart failure. An associate trainer, he assists in the training of the GP Registrars.

Dr Louisa Polak

BM BCh Oxford 1979 MRCP (Paeds) DRCOG MRCGP Dr. Polak works part-time at Nayland Surgery. She has a particular interest in paediatrics, and in teaching medical students and young doctors attached to the practice.

Dr Susan Dixon

MB BS London 1980 DRCOG Dr. Dixon works part-time at West Bergholt. She takes overall responsibility for all patients with diabetes in the practice and has an interest in family planning, including coil insertions.

Dr Kilian Hochstein-Mintzel

MRCGP DRCOG TU Munich 1995 Dr. Hochstein works at North Hill. He has an interest in dermatological conditions.

MD (Berlin) DCH DRCOG MRCGP Fellowship ENT Surgery (Berlin) Dr. van der Hoek works at our North Hill and West Bergholt Surgeries. He has a particular interest in ENT and teaching young doctors attached to our practice.

Dr Luis Vidal

LMS 1993 Basque Provinces, Spain T(GP) Dr. Vidal works at our North Hill and West Bergholt Surgeries. He is interested in all aspects of family medicine. He also has an interest in the management of drug misuse.

Dr James Hickling

MB, BS, Kings College London 1992, MRCGP, DCH, DFFP Dr Hickling usually works at Nayland Surgery on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. He covers the full range of general medical issues including diabetes. He works closely with Emma Gamble, one of our Nurse Practitioners, in caring for the residents of Nayland House Residential Home.

Dr. Kalynuk works at our Nayland and West Bergholt surgeries. He has an interest in General Medicine

Nurses

Practice nurses are qualified and registered nurses. They can help with health issues such as family planning, healthy living advice, blood pressure checks and dressings. The practice nurses run clinics for long-term health conditions such as asthma or diabetes, minor ailment clinics and carry out cervical smears.

Healthcare Assistants

Healthcare assistants support practice nurses with their daily work and carry out tasks such as phlebotomy (drawing blood), blood pressure measurement and new patient checks. They may act as a chaperone when a patient or doctor requests one.

Practice Management

Business Manager

Mark Galloway joined the practice in June 2011. He is responsible for all aspects of the operation of the Practice at all three surgery sites. He also deals with all Business related matters on behalf of the Partners. Mark is supported by three managers; they are :

Practice Manager

Glenys Talbot manages all day to day operational issues, as well as staff management and premises.

Clinical Services and Administration Manager

Rachel Beales' role is to support the clinicians at the practice by ensuring the Doctors, Nurses and Healthcare assistants rotas are organised, as well as ensuring that all clinical records are kept up to date.

Finance Manager

Valerie Sinclair has been with the Practice since 2008 and deal with all financial matters.

Administration

The Practice has a team of secretaries and administrators based at North Hill who deal with the administration for the three surgeries.

Reception

Receptionists provide an important link for patients with the practice and are your initial contact point for general enquiries. They can provide basic information on services and results and direct you to the right person depending on your health issue or query. Receptionists make most of the patient appointments with the GPs and nurses. They also perform other important tasks such as issuing repeat prescriptions and dealing with prescription enquiries, dealing with financial claims, dealing with patient records and carrying out searches and practice audits.

Health Visitors

A health visitor is a registered nurse who has received training particularly related to babies, children and pregnant women. Their role is to provide families with children under five years old with support and advice around the general aspects of mental, physical and social wellbeing.
